Post 3 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Monday, 10-Nov-2008 9:51:55

I got spybot to work, now I just need to get my samantic anti-virus to work, grr, looks like I'm going to be missing another day ofclasses thanks to this stupid laptop, urg, I've heard of AVG, but isn't it bad to run two different anti-virus softwares on your computer?

Post 4 by rat (star trek rules!) on Monday, 10-Nov-2008 11:00:47

i wouldn't run two anti-virus, they'll fight each other instead of doing their job. i've seen it before, not pretty.

best free and most accessible spyware remover is
http://www.superantispyware.com
easy and very very effective.
makes addaware, avg and spybot look useless

Post 6 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 10-Nov-2008 16:12:16

I just tried super antispyware and it removed a lot more stuff then spybot.

Post 7 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Monday, 10-Nov-2008 22:39:57

well, mycollege is using samantic, but whenever I tryto do a scan, either ful or quick it gives me the error reporting dialogue, spybot took like 20 minutes to scan my comp and the annoying thing is that it can't run in the backgroud so, grr.

Answer: screw all this installing 40 pieces of software, there is something in windows called the hosts file. Now most people don't know about it, it is located in c:windowssystem32driversetchosts. it is a text file though it has no extention. In here, domain names are entered that are sites of advertisements, such as ad.doubleclick.net and the like. By default, windows only has 127.0.0.1 and nothing more. the hosts file, if configured properly will block any and all traffic from coming in or out if it sees that a program is destined for a certain dns address or ip address. I will send anyone this updated hosts file with 14509 entries. Contact me if you are so inclined. Installing all this extra software will only eat away at system performance. On this note, I also advise using Avira antivirus, the best I and others have used to date. Threat fire is alos another very useful utility that I use alongside avira. only use this if you know what you are talking about.

Post 9 by rat (star trek rules!) on Monday, 17-Nov-2008 2:40:29

for one, i tried threat fire... very nasty results. came really close to a system recovery, not just a simple system restore. second, no matter what cody claims, you need anti-spyware and anti-virus, perioud. threat fire doesn't stop the stuff it removes it from what i understand.

just look at the write ups of super anti spy ware
enough said,

Cody is back? I thought he was gone for good. Well, I agree with buster, super anti spyware is excellent, spybott will eat away at your system files overtime. Get rid of samantech, its not that great. I'm agreeing with Cody here, and saying that Avira is extremely good. If u were to start writing the code for a virus, it'll alert you.

Post 13 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 20-Nov-2008 10:18:25

Not that I know of, just spyware, hence the name.

Post 14 by rat (star trek rules!) on Thursday, 20-Nov-2008 13:35:35

it can get low level viruses, i do believe. nothing too big though.

Post 15 by buster gonad (Account disabled) on Thursday, 20-Nov-2008 14:22:14

agreed rat i have seen it clear one i had once off youtube some fake link. still haven't found a good enough virus protection for my liking to this day.

alright, I was just informed lastnight that I can indeed get rid of samantic, and I was wondering how AVG worked. is it accessable?

AVG 8 is a little hard with jaws 10. If anyone knows of some easy shortcuts let me know.

i use super anti spyware with nod 32 internet security and windows defender, yes, three defences, but they don't seem to conflict at all. hehe good sheieiet.

Post 19 by jeffreyshockley (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Saturday, 22-Nov-2008 19:12:42

Not everyone wants to mess with the hosts file, Cody. I actually forgot about it.
second, when typing directory paths, seperate them with backslashes like there supposed to be. It makes it confusing when trying to read them.
I use Avast! Antivirus and Super Anti Spyware. I don't use Spybot much anymore. Although, I stil have it installed, I just turned off all the protection stuff it offers.
Also, it helps to keep these programs, including Windows, up-to-date.

Really mike? Didn't know Avira would do that. Sounds neat.

Post 21 by rat (star trek rules!) on Sunday, 23-Nov-2008 10:47:56

i considered trying nod32, but never found a setup for it. guess i'll have to look around a bit more

Post 22 by buster gonad (Account disabled) on Sunday, 23-Nov-2008 11:12:29

i used nod32 to 3 weeks, i wasn't impressed at all but as i have said in previous posts i haven't found a anti virus that satisfies me yet.

Post 23 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Sunday, 23-Nov-2008 15:47:03

well I'm running jaws 8, so any suggestions?

Post 24 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Sunday, 23-Nov-2008 17:03:04

I have trend micro...you have to buy it but it's good.
Also, I've used spybot search and destroy.

Post 25 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Monday, 24-Nov-2008 16:44:36

The host file is a nice helper, and its not that hard to set it the way Cody described. He showed me how to do it, its a matter of installing one program, copying a file to replace the old file, and uninstalling a program. Not that bad. I use Sygate personal firewall, Super Anti Spyware, and Avira Personal Edition. Sygate is a bit annoying when u first get it installed, because it will ask you what to allow and not allow when you first start up your programs, but after you tell it to remember your choice, its a really handy defense.
